Icon use in progressive web apps: practical guidance

An icon can make a progressive web app feel fast and familiar, but it can also turn a simple task into guesswork. The same interface may appear in a browser, an installed shortcut or an offline screen, so visual consistency matters as much as technical consistency.

Start with a source system rather than a folder of attractive symbols. PSD Icons offers free and premium collections in editable Photoshop PSD vector format alongside transparent PNG files, covering business, technology, finance, travel, social media and user-interface projects.

Define the role of every icon

Give each symbol one clear semantic role. A magnifying glass can indicate search, but it becomes confusing if the same control opens help. Record whether each icon represents an action, object, navigation destination or status before adding it to a screen.

Create an inventory that maps every icon to its label, function and accessible name. Familiar symbols may work without visible text in dense toolbars, while unfamiliar actions should remain paired with a label. Deletion, archiving and moving items, for example, need unmistakable differences.

Design a scalable visual system

Build icons on a consistent grid with matching strokes, corner radii and optical weight. A symbol that looks balanced at 24 pixels may appear uneven when enlarged, so designers should inspect each asset at its smallest intended size as well as at larger dimensions.

Use SVG where the interface permits it and prepare high-resolution PNG exports for raster contexts. Avoid enlarging a small PNG beyond its native resolution. Keep the editable PSD as the master, establish export presets and document any changes so every developer produces matching assets.

Asset provenance belongs beside this documentation. An unverified reference link should never enter a production library until its ownership, licence and suitability have been checked.

Prepare icons for installation and offline use

The web app manifest should include suitable 192-pixel and 512-pixel PNG icons, with a maskable version that keeps important shapes inside the safe area. Transparent PNG files work well within interface designs, but an installed application icon needs enough visual substance to remain recognisable against varied launcher backgrounds.

Keep browser controls, in-app navigation and installed shortcuts aligned. Favicons, touch icons and manifest artwork serve different purposes, so one undersized graphic should not be stretched across all of them. Preview each version on both light and dark operating-system themes.

This reliability matters across Australia. People in Sydney, Melbourne and regional areas of New South Wales or Queensland may move between trains, buildings and locations with intermittent mobile coverage. An offline view should preserve recognisable controls and explain unavailable actions rather than replacing them with unexplained symbols.

Make icons accessible to everyone

Use semantic buttons and links, then give icon-only controls an accessible name. Decorative icons can be hidden from assistive technology, while meaningful icons must not be. Visible text remains the safest choice when an action could be misunderstood.

Check contrast, focus states and touch targets. The interactive area around a small symbol should generally provide at least a 44-by-44 CSS-pixel target, and meaningful graphics should meet the applicable three-to-one non-text contrast benchmark. Never rely on colour alone to communicate selection, errors or completion.

Build for Australian language conventions. Use day-first dates and 24-hour times where appropriate, and allow room for labels written with “colour”, “centre” and “organisation”. Symbols must remain clear when translated text expands or changes alignment.

Test icons with Australian users

Test on the Android, iOS and desktop combinations used by the intended audience. Include older devices, bright outdoor conditions and one-handed journeys. Participants from Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and regional centres can reveal confusing metaphors that an internal design review misses.

Use familiar Australian wording such as “mobile”, “favourites” and “payment details”, then test whether each icon supports that label. People should recognise a shopping bag, filter, map pin or notification bell without needing a tutorial. Record incorrect taps as well as successful completion.

For Australian commerce flows, show prices in Australian dollars and make clear whether displayed prices include the 10% GST. Finance and account icons must also reflect real controls over data. Where the Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles apply, a privacy or lock symbol should accompany genuine consent, access and deletion functions.

Build a maintainable icon library

A dependable library needs naming rules, owners, export settings and a record of supported states. PSD Icons’ free collections can support prototypes, while expanded premium packs provide broader visual coverage for production interfaces.

  • Assign each asset a semantic name rather than describing its shape.
  • Store editable vectors and approved PNG exports together.
  • Pair ambiguous symbols with visible text and accessible names.
  • Include regular, active, disabled and error states.
  • Test every asset at intended sizes and display densities.
  • Record versions, licences and the source of each external reference.

Review assets by category, such as finance or travel, to identify stylistic clashes. A polished icon cannot compensate for inconsistent line weight or a confusing metaphor, so library-wide quality checks should happen before individual screens are finalised.

Measure impact and keep improving

Track task completion, mis-taps, time on task and support complaints involving icon-driven actions. Analytics can show which controls people use, but interviews are needed to understand why they hesitate. Rename or replace an icon when its interpretation differs from its intended action.

Control performance by shipping only the icons each view requires. Cache versioned assets through the service worker, avoid duplicate SVG and PNG copies and update the manifest whenever launcher artwork changes. Clear ownership prevents stale symbols from surviving between releases.

Audit the current progressive web app against these practices, then visit PSD Icons to download a free collection or choose a premium pack. Subscribe for new releases, organise the selected assets by category and begin replacing ambiguous icons with labelled, accessible controls.
